Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

For the most part, dental insurance and medical insurance are quite similar, but the primary difference comes down to one word: prevention. In general, dental insurance is focused on helping patients avoid oral health problems rather than waiting for them to develop. This is why your dental plan probably provides more coverage for preventive services, like cleanings and checkups, than for restorative treatments, like crowns and fillings.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Dental insurance coverage documents

We can’t tell you exactly what your plan covers without taking a look at it first, but the majority of dental insurance plans tend to look something like this:

  • Preventive services (X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, etc.) are covered at 80-100%.
  • Restorative services (tooth extractions, dentures, fillings, etc.) are covered at 50-80%.
  • Cosmetic services (teeth whitening, veneers, etc.) are NOT covered because they’re not considered medically necessary.

Essentially, if you want to minimize your out-of-pockets dental costs, you should take advantage of your insurance coverage by attending two checkups and cleanings per year.
